The mission of the Kent State University Dance Division is to develop
technically sound,
intellectually diverse and
creatively expressive dance artists and
educators
who can significantly to the art form and society in general. The
Dance Faculty strives to develop broad-minded, diverse men and women
who can thrive in a variety of professional dance environments.
The Dance (Performance/Choreography) and Dance Education Programs provide
students with opportunities

TECHNIQUE
To maximize studentsą experience and understanding of dance, the program provides opportunities to study a broad range of modern dance styles (classical modern, release techniques, eclectic styles), classical ballet and jazz dance styles. In addition, we offer students opportunities to acquire an anatomical understanding of the human body, utilizing intellectual, practical and somatic approaches.
CREATIVITY
We provide a structured and challenging curriculum of improvisation, dance composition and dance production along with a variety of choreographic opportunities that encourage creativity and risk-taking and a broad understanding of the technical aspects of theatre.
PERFORMANCE
Experiences that develop and enhance studentsą performing abilities include opportunities to perform works by faculty, students and guest artists in a wide range of dance and theatre works throughout each academic year.
TEACHING
Through individual and group teaching experiences in all forms of technique and a variety of ability levels; through specific dance education course offerings and guided internship experiences, all students have opportunities to develop their individual approach to dance instruction.
ACADEMICS
Students receive a strong academic foundation that explores historical and current perspectives connecting the art form to issues germane to a broader, more complex and diverse society.
COMMUNICATION AND CRITICAL THINKING
Students are provided with ample opportunities to develop writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills across the curriculum within the Dance program as well as in the Liberal Studies curriculum.
ADVISING AND MENTORING
- An extensive advising system gives students the opportunity to work
individually with faculty in academic planning and career planning as well as providing creative mentorship in the development of their artistic voices.
